Did you know that Emilie Beermann, a teacher at the Põltsamaa parish school, sewed Estonia’s first blue, black and white flag in 1884, which was blessed as the flag of the Estonian Students’ Association in Otepää Church on June 4, 1884? The tricolor was approved as the national flag on November 21, 1918.

On February 24, 1918, the Republic of Estonia was proclaimed with blue, black and white flags flying.

This story of how the flag was created is celebrated in a very special way every year in Põltsamaa. For example, on the 135th anniversary of the Estonian flag, Põltsamaa municipality invited everyone interested to form the world’s largest blue, black and white human flag.
